Biodiversity and Business: New Funding Program in Quebec

To mark International Biodiversity Day, Habitat highlight an initiative that will help accelerate action by Quebec organizations on biodiversity.

In the face of the climate crisis and the degradation of natural environments, biodiversity has become a critical strategic issue for businesses and organizations across all sectors. Integrating biodiversity into business practices not only helps reduce environmental impacts but also strengthens the resilience of regions, communities, and economic activities.

New funding dedicated to biodiversity

The Écoleader – Biodiversity Fund, coordinated by the FAQDD as part of the Quebec government’s Nature 2030 Plan, aims to support businesses, nonprofits, and cooperatives that wish to integrate biodiversity into their practices with the help of experts.

This new funding will be used, in particular, to finance projects such as:

  • diagnostics and analyses;

  • biodiversity action plans;

  • conservation and restoration procedures;

  • the integration of nature-based solutions;

  • strategies aimed at reducing the impact on natural environments.

At Habitat, we assist organizations with developing biodiversity action plans, assessing their impacts on and dependence on biodiversity, integrating nature-based solutions, and providing strategic guidance on biodiversity and climate resilience issues.

The program also provides support for certain collaborative initiatives between organizations addressing common biodiversity-related issues.

A concrete opportunity for organizations

  • integrating biodiversity into development projects;

  • biodiversity strategies and action plans;

  • climate adaptation and resilience;

  • assessments of businesses’ impacts on and dependence on biodiversity;

  • Integration of nature-based solutions and strategic guidance.

Why should companies incorporate biodiversity into their business strategy?

Biodiversity plays a vital role in climate change adaptation and community resilience. For organizations, addressing these issues also presents an opportunity to:

  • strengthen their ESG commitments;

  • improve the social acceptability of their projects;

  • reduce certain environmental and regulatory risks;

  • meet the growing expectations of investors and partners;

  • make a tangible contribution to the green transition.

Today, more and more companies are seeking to structure their environmental initiatives beyond carbon-related issues. Biodiversity is thus becoming both a strategic lever and a factor in long-term resilience.
