Public Institutions and NPOs
Customized services
Public and non-profit organisations are key players in biodiversity conservation. They contribute to developing innovative solutions and advancing scientific knowledge of biodiversity issues.
We support public institutions and NPOs in developing action plans and deploying avant-garde projects to protect nature. We rely on scientific knowledge to provide tailor-made services.
Our approach
At a time when the Quebec and Canadian governments have set ambitious targets for protecting 30% of their territory by 2030, finding a balance between different land uses is more important than ever. Habitat's scientific expertise is ideally suited to help public organisations meet these challenges.
Habitat helps NPOs specializing in conservation and environmental protection to obtain convincing scientific data and analysis on the biodiversity and climate issues at the heart of their missions. We aim to maximize and sustain the impact of your actions.
From prioritizing land conservation to implementing nature-based solutions, discover how Habitat can help you understand and protect your land through innovative action plans and projects. Â Â
-
Conservation of natural environments is one of the key areas of expertise of our team, which has carried out numerous prioritization analyses of conservation sites, based on criteria aligned with the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and best practices from the scientific literature, particularly in terms of ecological connectivity.
Our most comprehensive approach includes :
Identifying areas of high ecological value
Prioritizing these areas
Development of conservation scenarios to compare and maximize the benefits of the final strategy chosen.
-
Our approach to climate change adaptation is based on an in-depth understanding of current and future climate issues, and their impact on living and natural environments.Â
The innovative approaches developed by Habitat have proven their worth to land managers. We can help you identify the areas of vulnerability and resilience in your natural environments, understand the level of functional diversity in your urban or natural forests, or harness the full potential of nature-based solutions.
-
Thanks to its expertise in forestry, biodiversity, geography and ecological modeling, our team can help you determine optimal strategies for ecosystem restoration.
Whatever your goals, Habitat will provide you with the analysis you need to make informed decisions and take action.
-
Habitat has developed unique expertise in valuing the ecosystem services provided by natural assets. Our teams specialize in quantifying the benefits provided by these environments (such as air purification, flood prevention or carbon sequestration) and, where necessary, we translate these benefits into economic terms. Â
Thanks to these analyses, combined with our expertise in ecological modeling, Habitat enables stakeholders to make informed decisions on land use and development.
Some completed projects
CIRANO - Eco-taxation as a lever for conservationÂ
Commissioned by CIRANO, we studied the feasibility of deploying two eco-taxation tools based on the ecological footprint of land use with a view to protecting biodiversity and, more specifically, the critical habitats of certain species at risk in the St. Lawrence Lowlands region.
Environment Canada - Afforestation potential of agricultural corridorsÂ
Agricultural corridors are uncultivated areas located between a watercourse and an agricultural environment, where the slope makes farming impracticable. As part of this project, we modeled the ecosystem services and ecological connectivity benefits of reforesting the agricultural corridors identified in the target region.
Parks Canada - Supporting the conservation management of La Mauricie Park
We assessed ecological connectivity at the scale of La Mauricie National Park's Greater Ecosystem, and produced a portrait of the resilience of its forest stands. The results of this project are intended as a decision-making tool to guide conservation management in La Mauricie National Park.
