Coop Carbone and Habitat join forces to support RCMs in preparing climate plans

Coop Carbone and Habitat are pleased to announce their collaboration to support regional county municipalities (RCMs) in the preparation of their climate plans. A climate plan is a strategic roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and building community resilience to the impacts of climate change. This partnership marks an important milestone in our shared commitment to climate change adaptation and mitigation, which are essential to developing effective, integrated climate plans.

Coop Carbone and Habitat: A strategic partnership for RCMs

This partnership combines Coop Carbone's unique skills in GHG emissions reduction with Habitat's expertise in ecosystem management and biodiversity. Together, we offer a complete service, from the assessment of GHG emissions and the risks and vulnerabilities of living environments to the implementation of nature-based solutions, to help RCMs create climate plans that meet the specific challenges of their territories in the face of global change.

Why this partnership makes sense

As the impacts of climate change are increasingly felt, it is vital that adaptation strategies are combined with mitigation measures to create resilient communities. Our collaborative approach ensures that climate plans propose measures that maximize synergies between mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Coop Carbone and Habitat: complementary strengths

Our clients benefit from an integrated approach that is both science-based and tailored to local needs. Here are the main benefits and synergies of our partnership:

  • Holistic approach: integrating social, economic and environmental aspects.

  • Multidisciplinary expertise: a diverse team of experts in GHG management, climatology, ecology, land use planning, nature-based solutions, and more.

  • Complementary missions: Coop Carbone focuses on GHG reduction and energy efficiency, while Habitat specializes in biodiversity and adaptation to climate change.

  • Training and education: our services include training components to empower RCMs to manage their climate footprint.

  • Customized tools: developed specifically for the needs of RCMs and municipalities.

Climate plans for RCMs: what deliverables to expect?

Here are the main deliverables expected from this collaboration:

Adaptation to climate change (Habitat)

Climate portrait

  • Assessment of current climate and projections for 2041-2070 and 2071-2100.

  • Analysis based on two GHG emission scenarios: medium and high.

Vulnerability diagnosis

  • Assessing the vulnerability of territories to climate change.

  • Identify risks to people, services and infrastructure.

  • Integration of existing control measures and probabilities of occurrence of climatic hazards.

Mapping risk areas

  • Geolocation and prioritization of areas most at risk.

  • Estimated potential impact on infrastructures, services and populations.

Adaptation measures

  • Identification and proposal of adaptation measures based on risk analysis.

  • Infrastructure and crisis management solutions tailored to local needs.

Climate change mitigation (Coop Carbone)

GHG emissions inventory

  • Corporate and collective inventories in compliance with government guides and ISO 14064-1.

  • Quantification methodology balancing accuracy, data collection effort and relevance of results.

  • Customized calculation tools to enable RCMs and municipalities to update their inventories independently.

Definition of reduction targets

  • Monitoring of targets adopted by comparable municipalities.

  • Stakeholder consultation to define ambitious yet realistic targets.

Measures to reduce GHG emissions

  • Identification of reduction measures for all sectors: transport, buildings, agriculture, industry, waste management and wastewater treatment.

  • Quantification of the reduction potential of each measure, in accordance with ISO 14064-2.

  • Stakeholder consultation and knowledge transfer to prioritize measures and develop an action plan.
