Conservation plans for natural environments on your territory

The development of conservation plans is a combination of all our services.
Our team carries out economic valuations of ecosystem services, analyses of connectivity in natural environments and the functional diversity of trees.

The construction of a conserrvation plan can be broken down into 5 stages:

  • Define the municipality's or community's conservation vision and objectives

  • Drawing up an ecological portrait of the territory

  • Review existing regulations and administrative constraints

  • Determine conservation strategies: identification of biodiversity hotspots, ecological corridors and buffer strips, zoning and land use.

  • Draft recommendations and propose associated scenarios

With this information, we assess conservation priorities and propose recommendations for land-use planning that will promote biodiversity and the connectivity and resilience of land and ecosystems.

  • A Natural Environment Conservation Plan is a land management tool that seeks to identify and protect important elements of natural heritage while guiding the municipality's sustainable development.

    There are many advantages:

    • Increased property values adjacent to natural areas.

    • Lower infrastructure costs thanks to improved planning.

    • Better understanding of the municipality's natural environment.

    • Identifying and preserving key elements of the local natural heritage.

    • Balancing conservation and territorial development.

    • Integrating natural environments into urban planning.

    • Simplification of urban planning regulations based on the conservation plan.

    • Facilitating green space planning.

    • Protection of wetlands providing crucial ecological services (flood prevention, water quality and quantity, etc.).

    • Simplified assessment of permit applications.

    • Promotion of the municipality's image as an environmentally-friendly place.

    • Opportunity to raise awareness among developers and residents of the importance of preserving the local natural heritage.

    • Contributing to a better quality of life for the municipality's residents.

Our project with the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF)
for the Communauté Métropolitaine de Montréal

Taking into account the contribution of natural environments to biodiversity, protection of status species, carbon storage, restoration and susceptibility to development, ecological connectivity and hydrological functions, we have ranked the conservation priorities of the MWC's natural environments.

The interactive map allows you to visualize natural environments in the MMC and provides information on their prioritization according to several ecological indices. Select the conservation target (%) from the bar at the bottom.

Note: The estimate of protected and unprotected areas is based on data from the Registre des Aires Protégées du Québec (RAPQ) available at Données Québec: https://www.donneesquebec.ca
