Evaluating the services provided by the trees in Parc Jean-Drapeau

In order to improve public understanding of the benefits of the trees that surround us, the Parc Jean Drapeau Society commissioned Habitat to assess the ecosystem services of the trees in the park. The inventory data and assessed ecosystem services were integrated into the Montreal Urban Forest Visualization Tool, created and published by Habitat in collaboration with the David Suzuki Foundation.

Monetary values of the services rendered by the trees of Parc Jean-Drapeau :

Carbon sequestration: $12,744/year

Air quality improvement: $50,771.74/year

Stormwater Avoidance: $4,720.95/year

In total, the annual monetary benefits provided by the trees in Parc Jean Drapeau amount to nearly $70,000. The various ecosystem services associated with urban trees improve the quality of life of citizens and contribute to their well-being. For example, improved air quality helps reduce the impact of air pollution, thereby reducing the risk of illness and death related to air pollution.
